In a World of Digital Oversharing, Strava Is Reminding Users That Some Workouts Are Better Kept Private
The platform where you can't fake your miles wants to make sure you're choosing which ones to share
San Francisco, CA — April 14, 2026 — Strava, the app for active people with over 195 million users, is reminding its community to use the privacy features already built into the platform. Some of those users are doing laps in places they probably shouldn't be broadcasting. We're not going to name names.
Strava is where real effort lives. Whatever your sport, whatever your pace, every activity logged here actually happened, and that's what motivates people to keep going. For most users that means sharing a workout or a new route. But, for some users, being mindful about what you share is an essential part of the job. The good news is that privacy and safety are foundational to how Strava is built, so you're always in control of what you share.
How to Stay in Control of What You Share
Some workouts start and end somewhere personal, which is why Privacy Zones automatically hide sensitive locations — home, work, a school run — by removing start and end points from activities. Set the area and Strava handles the rest. Beyond that, our community has full control over who sees their profile, activities, and maps. Users have the ability to update those settings whenever their needs change, whether that's a single activity or an entire workout history. There is also functionality that allows you to hide individual stats in an activity, like start time, pace or heartrate. Lastly, Strava's Terms of Service explicitly reminds users about responsible use for those in sensitive professional roles or locations. We believe staying active and staying safe go hand in hand. The miles are yours, and so is the choice of who sees them.
