Strava Launches Redesigned Apple Watch App, Now with Live Segments

San Francisco, CA – September 4, 2025 – Strava, the app for active people with more than 150 million athletes globally, today launched its redesigned app for Apple Watch. The update introduces a performance-focused interface built to help athletes get, and stay, moving, and brings Live Segments to athletes’ wrists for the first time.

A Redesigned Strava Experience on Apple Watch

In 2024, Strava saw a nearly 20% year-over-year increase in the share of device-uploading athletes using an Apple Watch, with Apple holding the top two spots for preferred devices among runners in Strava's 2024 Year in Sport report. To meet this growing demand from Strava’s global community, the redesigned Apple Watch app delivers a cleaner, more intuitive experience for athletes at every stage of their fitness journey. Key updates include:

  • Performance-focused design: Alongside Live Segments, the updated design helps athletes get and stay moving—from quickly starting an activity to viewing clear, easy-to-read performance stats that keep them on pace.

  • Stats at a glance: See pace, distance, time, and heart rate clearly while moving.

  • Streamlined syncing: Automatic and reliable syncing functionality directly to Strava.

Users can expect a continued investment in Strava’s Apple Watch app, with additional features coming later this year.

Live Segments: Real-Time Competition Comes to Apple Watch

Live Segments allow users to compete against themselves or the Strava community on starred or popular Segments—stretches of road or trail—around the world. This signature Strava feature is now available on the platform’s updated Apple Watch app, transforming everyday runs and rides into motivating, game-like experiences for athletes right from their wrist.

On Apple Watch, Live Segments are intuitive and motivating. As athletes approach a segment, a banner with the segment name and a circle indicator appears on the watch face. As they enter the segment, the circle updates in real time to reflect progress, providing a clear visual cue that shows whether the athlete is ahead or behind their personal record. At the end of the segment, final results are displayed instantly before the app seamlessly transitions back to the standard recording screen.

All Strava athletes get real-time updates when entering a Live Segment, and additional haptic cues when entering a starred segment.  Strava subscribers can unlock additional features to help them stay motivated and focused during their activity:

  • Live performance tracking: Athletes can see how their current pace compares to their personal record in real-time.

  • Progress updates: Get a countdown showing exactly how much distance remains in the segment.

  • Instant results: Athletes immediately see how their completed segment time stacks up against their personal best.

“Apple Watch has become an increasingly popular wearable for athletes on Strava," said Matt Salazar, Chief Product Officer, Strava. "This investment in Apple Watch is more than just tracking a workout—it's about delivering the real-time, game-like features athletes love to motivate them in the moment."

This announcement follows enhancements to the integration between Apple Fitness+ and Strava earlier this year, demonstrating the ongoing collaboration between Apple and Strava in service of bringing more value, inspiration, and motivation to athletes globally.

The redesigned Strava Apple Watch app is now available globally for devices with watchOS 10 or later. Download the Strava app from the App Store to get started. Plus, Strava subscribers and trial users on iOS can redeem up to three months of Apple Fitness+.
