Strava, Safe Routes Partnership Join Forces to Support Walking and Biking to School

A new partnership brings the Strava community alongside Safe Routes Partnership’s national network of coordinators, parents, and caregivers

SAN FRANCISCO – OCTOBER 22, 2026 – Strava, the app for active people with more than 200 million users in more than 185 countries, today announced a new partnership with Safe Routes Partnership, the national nonprofit that supports more than 425 Safe Routes to School programs across all 50 states. Together, the two organizations will put data, community, and resources behind the local practitioners making it safer for kids to walk, bike, and roll to school. The partnership was announced on stage at Safe Routes Partnership’s 20th Anniversary National Conference in Minneapolis on Thursday, October 22, with a shared call to action launching alongside it.

“Strava’s mission is to motivate the world to move, and safer streets are where that mission meets daily life,” said Brian Bell, Vice President of Communications and Social Impact, Strava. “Safe Routes Partnership has built a national network of people doing exactly that work. We’re proud to put the Strava platform and community behind them, so this movement has a place to gather and be seen at the scale it deserves.”

As part of the partnership, Strava and Safe Routes Partnership are inviting parents, caregivers, and local practitioners across the country to make the daily walk and bike to school visible on a national scale. Every trip logged adds to a shared picture of what getting to school looks like in communities everywhere, and connects the people doing this work in different places. Here’s how to take part:

  • Join the Safe Routes to School Strava Club

  • Log trips to school on Strava

  • Mention @Safe Routes to School in the activity description

  • For extra visibility, tag With Kid and For a Cause, and use #SRTS when sharing on social media

“The walk to school is more than just exercise or transportation. It builds community: neighbors who know each other, kids who know their neighborhoods, families with a reason to get out the door and moving together,” said Marisa Jones, Executive Director of Safe Routes Partnership. “Safe Routes to School has always been powered by local action. Strava gives this community a place to see itself, thousands of morning walks and bike buses at once, a parent in one city getting kudos from three time zones away. That visibility, connection, and accountability are what keep people showing up, and that’s how local actions strengthen the national Safe Routes to School movement.”

The partnership builds on 20 years of Safe Routes to School work with measurable results. Safe Routes to School programs have demonstrated:

  • More than 40% increase in kids walking and biking to school in communities with Safe Routes to School programs that combine infrastructure improvements with encouragement

  • 65 million Americans live within half a mile of a school, a reasonable distance to walk or bike

  • $4.40 returned in health and safety benefits for every $1 invested in Safe Routes to School programs

  • 425+ local Safe Routes to School programs active across all 50 states

Those outcomes depend on the people doing the work in their communities, from state coordinators and city planners to the parents and caregivers leading bike buses and walking school buses. The partnership between Strava and Safe Routes Partnership puts a platform and community alongside their work, so the movement has a place to gather, be seen, and grow.
