Strava Introduces Proprietary Map Rendering Engine

Latest update provides a deeper level of detail for Strava users

SAN FRANCISCO – March 6, 2025 – Strava, the app for active people, unveiled a major upgrade to its maps, integrating its own proprietary mapping engine into its app. Now with lifelike 3D terrain, detailed satellite imagery, and new maps layers for planning winter and trail activities, Strava’s maps deliver additional value for users looking to stay active outdoors year round.

Powered by the company’s proprietary Map Rendering Engine (MRE), Strava’s maps now utilize technology from FATMAP, an outdoor adventure platform acquired in 2022. This latest update brings key elements of FATMAP’s highly detailed maps to Strava’s global community of more than 150 million users.

With the new MRE, users can expect the new map layers to provide a greater level of insight including:

  • Avalanche Gradient - Shows only the slope gradients where an avalanche is likely to release, from 25° to 45°+.

  • Gradient - Shows slope angle from 0° to 90° to help users understand the steepness of their terrain.

  • Aspect -  Shows the direction a slope faces to help users find the best snow and understand how much sun a particular face of the mountain might receive.

  • Winter Map Style - Winter-focused map for better planning and reliving of snow activities.

Moreover, the new map layers add to Strava’s already robust suite of planning features, including Night and Weekly Heatmaps, which were introduced last year.

Users can find Strava’s new maps and terrain layers in the Maps Tab on the app or when looking back at past activities.

Strava’s new MRE furthers its commitment to map innovation. The company will use the MRE to continue to build upon their current mapping experience and value for their community of runners and cyclists.
