Strava Introduces Custom Waypoints for Route Planning

Subscribers can individualize their route and upload the custom waypoints to Garmin devices

Strava, the subscription platform at the center of connected fitness, today announced a new feature, custom waypoints, empowering subscribers to curate their own points of interest onto a route, as part of the web routebuilder tool.

The latest addition enhances the platform's suite of tools dedicated to adventure planning and outdoor exploration. This feature is advantageous for planning, allowing subscribers to tailor their routes to accommodate personal preferences, such as marking aid stations, restrooms, and other crucial information along their chosen path.

Additionally, the new feature is compatible with Garmin® smartwatches and Edge® cycling computers. Strava subscribers can seamlessly sync their custom waypoints to their Garmin device via Garmin Connect™ to receive GPS alerts while navigating a route.

This shared feature can elevate the planning process, especially for event organizers. Now, they can inform participants about dangerous curves, upcoming aid stations, water sources, café stops, and other key points along planned routes. Strava subscribers using a Garmin device will also receive distance updates and alerts to each waypoint along a route using the Garmin “Up-Ahead” feature.

Subscribers can access Strava’s Route Planning tools on the web at or review recommended routes in the mobile app’s Maps tab.
